Above a discount supermarket in eastern Paris lies a hidden gem. Galerie Scenarii. A seemingly unassuming entrance leads to a remarkable 770 square meter loft-like space. This is no ordinary gallery.
Galerie Scenarii is more than just a place to buy design objects. It’s a carefully curated experience. A conversation between pieces you might not normally see together. It’s a space where a 1900s Carlo Bugatti chair sits comfortably beside a Rick Owens design from a century later.
The gallery’s director Jonathan Haddad and creative director Olivier Leone have masterfully transformed the space. Originally designed by Gustave Eiffel’s studio for a mechanical toy company. The building underwent extensive renovations. Walls were removed to reveal a stunning atrium ceiling. Concrete floors and a mezzanine were added. The walls stripped back to bare plaster. One entire wall is now covered in oxidized metal. A testament to their vision.
The collection itself is constantly evolving. It changes every four months. Showcasing both renowned designers and lesser-known talents. Including Haddad’s own creations such as an oversized coffee table inspired by sacred geometry. The gallery aims to democratize design. Making it accessible to a new generation. While some pieces such as a Jorge Zalszupin coffee table might be out of reach. Others by Rei Kawakubo might tempt younger buyers.
The name Scenarii reflects the gallery’s approach to design. Like a movie scene. The pieces are carefully staged to create a dialogue between objects. Creating a cohesive and immersive environment. This is artfully demonstrated with Shiro Kuramata’s sleek metal mesh chair placed next to Shiro Tsujimura’s ancient-looking Shigaraki jar. A juxtaposition of modern and ancient. Despite their different ages.
But Galerie Scenarii is not just about furniture. It also features art. Guest curators like Hélène Nguyen-Ban contribute to the diverse collection. Bringing works from artists such as Steven Parrino and Ed Ruscha. Even a rare Yves Klein fire painting is featured. Hung behind a vibrant red Art Nouveau corner bench.
