Hidden amidst the urban sprawl, Empalme Bancalari “C” whispers a forgotten tale of converging tracks and bygone journeys. Empalme Bancalari “C” wasn’t always a ghost. It started life as “Kilómetro 31,” marking its spot along the Victoria – Capilla del Señor – Pergamino line. The name changed in the 1960s to Empalme Bancalari “C,” reflecting its new role as a junction. This junction was where the “C” line, inherited from the Ferrocarril Central Argentino (F.C.C.A.) connecting Rosario Central to Retiro, met the “R” line of the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires a Rosario (F.C.B.A. & R.) running from Rosario Norte to Retiro. Imagine the bustle of trains from different lines meeting here at Empalme Bancalari “C.” The control of this crucial interchange, with its signals and switches, fell to the nearby Bancalari signal box, located on the “R” line near Bancalari “R” station. The life of Empalme Bancalari “C” wasn’t without its aliases. Before becoming “Kilómetro 31,” its original name referenced the distance markers along the line, although the actual mileage from Retiro Mitre was slightly less. In its twilight years, in the 1980s, as nature began to reclaim it, it was briefly known as “Apeadero 20 de Julio.” Today, Empalme Bancalari “C” exists only in memory and whispers of the past, lost to time and vegetation. Its story serves as a reminder of a time when the rhythm of the rails beat strong through this area.
