Beneath the bustling streets of Grafton lies a secret. A secret so well-hidden it was almost forgotten. This is Grafton Volcano.

For over 150 years its existence was only hinted at on an old map. Ferdinand von Hochstetter a pioneering geologist mapped this area in 1864. He recognized four volcanic vents near the Auckland Domain. One of these turned out to be Grafton Volcano. It remained buried beneath layers of ash and urban development.

Recently scientists using borehole data from building foundations discovered the truth. They pieced together a volcanic puzzle using the thicknesses of lava flows and ash. They unveiled a crater about one kilometer across. It’s filled with solidified lava flows. Grafton Volcano is surprisingly large.

The volcano erupted long ago before its neighbor the Domain volcano. This was over 50000 years ago. The Domain volcano’s ash buried Grafton Volcano completely hiding it from view. Only modern technology allowed its rediscovery. Airborne surveys revealed its presence through magnetic readings. Lava is highly magnetic.

The discovery of Grafton Volcano is thrilling. It highlights the power of nature and its secrets beneath our feet. This hidden giant is a reminder of Auckland’s dynamic geological history. It’s a history that continues to shape the city we see today. The story of Grafton Volcano is exciting. It’s a testament to the ongoing research efforts into Auckland’s volcanic past. This helps prepare the city for any future volcanic activity. The Grafton Volcano is more than a geological curiosity. It is a window into a hidden past.
