What became of Saint Ann Church? That’s a question many have asked since its closure. Saint Ann Catholic Church, once a vibrant hub in Pilsen, has a story that intertwines faith and community change.

Saint Ann Church opened its doors in 1903. For over a century, it served as a spiritual anchor for the Pilsen neighborhood. It witnessed generations of families, their joys, and sorrows.

In June 2016, a significant change occurred. The Archdiocese of Chicago announced that Saint Ann Church would merge with St. Paul. This decision was part of a broader consolidation effort. The reasons cited were shifting demographics, declining Mass attendance, and a decrease in the number of priests.

The closure deeply affected parishioners. They mourned the end of an era. The church at 1840 S. Leavitt St. and an adjacent property were sold for $1.35 million. This transaction occurred last month according to broker SVN Chicago Commercial.

Evenlight Leavitt LLC is the new owner of Saint Ann Church. They plan to transform the building into apartments or condos. The developers aim to convert the building into residential living. The original building will be retained. The sale price reflected the significant work needed on the church.

Saint Ann’s school will remain operational. This provides some continuity for the community. The developers received a permit to renovate the building.

The Archdiocese explored how the church could be best utilized for the benefit of the Pilsen community.

Two other Pilsen churches were also targeted for closure. Providence of God ended Mass services in 2017. It merged with St. Procopius. St. Adalbert Catholic Church was set to close due to the high costs of repairing its towers. Masses continue today at the site.

Saint Ann Church stands as a reminder of Pilsen’s evolving landscape. Its legacy lives on in the memories of those it served.
