High above Auckland’s bustling streets Commercial Bay stands tall. A modern marvel it replaced a much smaller shopping centre. This wasn’t just any mall though. Its location holds a secret a story of Auckland’s transformation.

Commercial Bay occupies land that was once a historic bay. Imagine a time before towering skyscrapers. Before the city sprawled across the isthmus. Before modern Auckland existed. Commercial Bay was then a real bay a body of water. It was framed by two headlands Smale’s Point and Point Britomart. The Waihorotiu Stream flowed into it.

Commercial Bay’s name isn’t arbitrary. It was intended as the city’s business centre. This is why it bears this name. This contrasts with Official Bay where government officers were initially based. Logan Campbell even pitched his tent there in 1840 after hearing Auckland would become the capital.

The bay’s transformation is a story of reclamation. From roughly 1860 to 1920 Auckland quarried away those headlands. The stone was used as fill to expand the city. The original coastline was reshaped. A new waterfront was created with large quays. By 1955 about 1.6 square kilometres had been reclaimed. Commercial Bay as a natural bay disappeared. It became the thriving commercial heart of modern Auckland.

The present Commercial Bay shopping centre sits on this reclaimed land. Its construction is itself a significant event. The City Rail Link tunnels pass beneath it. This new building also shows another chapter in the area’s story. Its history has been preserved in its name. The name reflects its origins a historic bay that shaped Auckland’s identity. Commercial Bay isn’t just a shopping centre. It’s a monument to the city’s growth. It stands as a testament to Auckland’s ambition. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine.
