In 1901, a vision took root. Fr George Robinson purchased this site for what would become Our Holy Redeemer Church.

Our Holy Redeemer stands as a testament to faith. It also represents community in Surrey Hills. The church was originally named the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. Archbishop Thomas Carr blessed and opened it on May 11, 1902.

Each year, Our Holy Redeemer celebrates the Feast of Christ the King. This feast falls on the last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year. Pope Pius XI instituted it in 1925. It emphasizes Christ’s glory at the end of time.

Look at the icon of the Holy Redeemer. Fr Mark Reynolds commissioned Geoff Horgan to paint it in 2019. It shows Christ with open arms, embracing all.

The icon is painted on gesso over wood. The artist used egg tempera, a mix of pigment, egg yolk, and water. This ancient technique predates oil paint. The background shimmers with pure gold leaf.

Notice the four symbols around Christ. They represent the Evangelists. The angel is St Matthew. The lion symbolizes St Mark. The eagle stands for St John. The ox represents St Luke. These images come from Ezekiel and Revelations.

Our Holy Redeemer School shares a deep history with the church. The Sisters of St Joseph established the school over 100 years ago. The first lay principal was appointed in the late 1970s.

The school remains an integral part of the Surrey Hills Wattle Park Parish. It is known for its diversity and welcoming spirit. Parents actively participate in fundraising and classroom activities.

Mass times are held here. Saturday Vigil is at 6.00 pm. Sunday Mass is at 10.30 am.

Consider the dedication and artistry within these walls. Our Holy Redeemer continues to be a spiritual beacon. It enriches the lives of those it serves. It is a welcoming community for all.
