Nestled in the heart of Buenos Aires lies Plaza Libertad. It’s a place of quiet beauty, but its story is anything but quiet. In the late 18th century, this area wasn’t a plaza at all. It was known as the “Hueco de Doña Engracia,” or Doña Engracia’s Hollow. This was a reference to a homeless woman who lived there in a small hut. The “huecos” were essentially vacant lots, overgrown and neglected, belonging to no one. Imagine this bustling city with a wild, untamed space right in its center. Plaza Libertad began to take shape in 1809. Neighbors petitioned for the area to become a public square. This coincided with the May Revolution, a pivotal moment in Argentina’s history. Interestingly, even as Buenos Aires declared its independence from Spain, the First Junta still named the newly inaugurated plaza after King Ferdinand VII in 1810. It wasn’t until 1822, under Rivadavia’s decree, that Plaza Libertad finally received its current name, first as Plaza de la Libertad and later simplified to Plaza Libertad. Today, as you stand in Plaza Libertad, you can almost feel the echoes of its past. From a neglected hollow to a royal namesake, and finally to a symbol of freedom, this plaza reflects the very spirit of Argentina’s journey. Sadly, the original artistic fountain mentioned in the historical records is no longer complete. The bust that once graced it was stolen, leaving only the base as a reminder of what once was. This reminds us that history is not static. It’s a living, breathing thing, constantly changing, just like the city around us.
