Did you know that Centro de Futebol Zico wasn’t always called that? Initially this incredible sporting institution was known as Rio de Janeiro Sociedade Esportiva. This is the Centro de Futebol Zico in Rio de Janeiro.
The story begins in 1996. Six months after the first anniversary of Zico’s football center a groundbreaking event took place. The CFZ do Rio was officially registered. This marked the birth of Brazil’s first ever club-company. Zico’s vision was to build a club. This would provide a pathway for young players from his football school to compete.
Teams were formed across five main age groups. These included mirim infantil juvenil juniores and professional levels. The very first game was a youthful clash. It was against São Cristóvão in Duque de Caxias. This was part of the Copa Rio tournament.
The professional team hit the ground running. Entering the third division of the Campeonato Estadual in 1997 they immediately won the title. This was a remarkable achievement. The final was on September 27th. They beat Duquecaxiense 1-0. The winning goal was scored by Takayuki Suzuki a Japanese player who would later play for Japan’s national team under Zico himself.
Success wasn’t limited to the professional team. The junior and youth teams also thrived. Under the guidance of former Flamengo midfielders Adílio and Andrade both contemporaries of Zico. The CFZ secured the tri-championship in the Second Division of Juniores in 1999 2000 and 2002. They also won the Taça Otávio Pinto Guimarães twice. This tournament showcased the top teams in the state.
In 1998 a name change occurred. The club became officially known as Centro de Futebol Zico do Rio. This name perfectly captured the essence of its founder’s legacy. The ‘do Rio’ addition was crucial. It ensured the original essence of the idea remained intact.
But the legacy of Centro de Futebol Zico extends far beyond trophies. It’s a testament to Zico’s commitment to nurturing young talent. It’s a story of triumph perseverance and the enduring power of sport. It’s a place where dreams take flight. A place deeply rooted in the heart of Rio. So take a moment.
