“Eight thousand six hundred square feet,” whispered a student, staring up at Greenhouse No. 2. “Imagine all the plants!” Indeed, Greenhouse No. 2 at San Francisco State University is a marvel of modern design. This single-story structure, nestled on the north side of Hensill Hall, replaced temporary buildings, becoming a permanent fixture for the College of Science and Engineering. Greenhouse No. 2 isn’t just a large glass box. It houses twelve individually controlled rooms, each a microcosm of specific climates. Three “Collections Rooms”—cool humid, warm humid, and arid—showcase plants for courses and public display. Seven research rooms hum with the activity of faculty and students, delving into the secrets of the plant world. There’s even a dedicated space for the Friends of the Greenhouse, the student volunteers who nurture these botanical treasures. Greenhouse No. 2’s construction in 2006 was a significant step, demonstrating the university’s commitment to botanical research and education. It stands as a testament to the vital role plants play in our world, from research to conservation.
