Josephine Bradley Park in Chicago has a rich history. It began in 1943. Developers in the Jeffery Manor section donated four acres. They gave this land to the city for a public park. For a while it was just an unimproved playfield. The Bureau of Parks and Recreation managed it. Then in the 1950s they created plans for a playground. A small brick building was also part of the plan. Construction started and the park transformed. In 1957 the park officially became part of the Chicago Park District.
The park wasn’t always called Bradley Park. For years it was known as Bensley Park. That was the name of a nearby street. But in 1989 things changed. The United Neighborhood Organization requested a name change. They wanted to honor Josephine Bradley. She was a local resident and a passionate community activist. Josephine worked tirelessly with UNO. She helped with numerous projects in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood. Among other achievements Josephine helped secure a school gym for after-school programs. She addressed flooding problems. She showed a deep commitment to the area’s parks. Her dedication made her a beloved figure. That’s why the park bears her name today.
In 1975 the Park District improved the park even further. They rebuilt the playground and added tennis courts. Today Josephine Bradley Park is more than just a playground. It’s a community hub. It features a multi-purpose clubroom. Outside there are tennis courts ball diamonds and basketball courts. The park even hosts events throughout the year. Holiday themed events are especially popular. Children participate in the Park Kids after-school program. Seasonal sports are also available. Summer brings the Chicago Park District’s popular six-week day camp.
