A mistaken response. A five-dollar bill. This seemingly insignificant event launched a century of education. Welcome to the College of the Holy Spirit Manila.

Here on Mendiola Street stands a place steeped in history. Founded in 1913 it began as Holy Ghost College a humble school for Manila’s poor children. Archbishop Jeremias Harty invited the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit to establish this institution. His vision was to counter the spread of Protestantism. The sisters initially believed the money was a donation from the Archbishop himself. They were thrilled. They gratefully accepted this unexpected blessing.

The College of the Holy Spirit Manila wasn’t always on this very spot. It started on Legarda Street. Then it moved here in 1922. A 12000-square-meter campus was purchased. The school grew quickly. It expanded to include high school and college departments. Initially only girls were accepted. Boys joined the school in 2005. The Nursing program was the first to admit male students.

The College of the Holy Spirit Manila wasn’t just about academics. It was a community a family. Generations of students walked these halls. They made memories forged friendships. They pursued knowledge and served others. The school became a respected member of the Mendiola Consortium. This collaboration involved other prestigious institutions like Centro Escolar University Manila.

The College of the Holy Spirit Manila strived for excellence. It became a founding member of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools Colleges and Universities in 1957. This commitment to quality led to numerous accolades. Level III accreditation was achieved. The school also received the National Consumers Quality Award. This recognition cemented its place as a top Catholic girls’ school.

However even the most esteemed institutions face challenges. In 2020 the College of the Holy Spirit Manila announced its closure. The reasons cited were multiple. The K-12 curriculum changes posed difficulties. Free tuition in public schools increased competition. Rising teacher salaries added to financial pressures. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these existing issues.

The College of the Holy Spirit Manila closed in April 2022. Its legacy however endures. The stories of its students its faculty and its administrators continue to inspire. The spirit of Veritas in Caritate Truth in Love lives on in the hearts of those who were a part of this remarkable institution. The building stands as a testament to its rich history. It represents the dedication to education that defined this institution for over a century.
