This sprawling campus wasn’t built overnight. It grew organically. First came the French National Centre for Scientific Research in 1946. Soon after the Atomic Energy Commission and ONERA joined the burgeoning scientific community. Higher education institutions quickly followed. The University of Paris established a presence in 1955 acquiring 50 hectares. This marked the start of what would become the renowned Orsay campus. By 1956 laboratories from the Paris Faculty of Sciences relocated establishing a vital link between research and education.

The 1970s brought another wave of growth. u00c9cole Polytechnique and Supu00e9lec arrived. The campus continued its expansion attracting private companies. Danone established a research center in 2000. Thales and Kraft Foods followed bolstering the already impressive research capacity.

The vision of a “French Silicon Valley” took shape. This ambitious project spurred massive investment and construction. A modern campus gradually replaced the older structures. New buildings like the Joint Research Cluster Computing center opened in 2011. The development involved significant investment from government initiatives. The campus benefited from the Grand Paris project with plans for improved accessibility via metro line 18.

Despite initial concerns from environmental groups regarding agricultural land loss and criticism about the project’s focus on elite schools the campus continues to thrive. It is now home to more than 13000 students and 2100 doctoral candidates. Thousands of researchers and staff work within its vibrant research labs.
