Did you know that Christians Kirke was once known as Frederiks tyske kirke? That’s right this beautiful Rococo church in Christianshavn wasn’t always called Christians Kirke. It was built for Copenhagen’s large German community between 1754 and 1759. Designed by the renowned Nicolai Eigtved it stands as a testament to his architectural brilliance. Sadly Eigtved died before its completion. His son-in-law Georg David Anthon oversaw the finishing touches including the striking spire added in 1769.
Christians Kirke boasts a unique rectangular layout. The nave’s exceptional width is a noteworthy feature. Built of yellow brick with sandstone detailing it’s a striking sight. Its 70-meter tower dominates the northern facade. This is the main entrance. Notice the elegant Ionic pilasters decorating the portal. The tall slender arched windows add to the church’s grace.
Inside Christians Kirke resembles a theatre. Three tiers of galleries rise to the full height of the building. These provide excellent views of the altar area. The ornate altarpiece is a masterpiece. It seamlessly integrates the altar table the pulpit and the organ. This design is truly special. The congregation literally surrounds the performers creating a unique atmosphere. This theatrical design is the reason why it is often called the Theatre Church.
Christians Kirke has a fascinating history. It served the German congregation until 1886. Its name changed in 1901. This commemorated King Christian IV who founded Christianshavn in 1617. The change also distinguished it from another Frederiks Kirke. Christians Kirke has been a regular parish church since 1991 serving parts of Christianshavn and Slotsholmen.
Beneath the church lies a large crypt. This crypt extends under the entire nave. It’s divided into 48 burial chapels. It’s been used for burials since 1759 and continues to be used today. Famous individuals rest here. These include the Danish historian Peter Frederik Suhm and the rock and roll legend Link Wray. The crypt is a testament to the church’s enduring presence in the lives of the community.
