“Isar waters, secrets they keep,” whispered an old Munich resident, gesturing towards Brudermühlsteg. “This bridge, it has seen more than its share of feuds and reconciliations.” The Brudermühlsteg, a seemingly ordinary bridge spanning the Großes Stadtbach, carries a rich history intertwined with the very spirit of Munich. It’s more than just a crossing; it’s a thread in the city’s vibrant tapestry. The bridge’s name, Brudermühlsteg, originates from a mill that once stood here. This mill, along with a nearby farm, belonged to two feuding brothers. Local legends still whisper of their intense rivalry. The original Brudermühlsteg, a humble wooden structure, was built in 1904 alongside the first Brudermühlbrücke. It was replaced in 1927 with a more robust concrete version. This bridge, unfortunately, suffered damage during World War II but was later restored. The Brudermühlsteg we see today is a result of several reconstructions. In 1965-66, a wider bridge replaced its predecessor. Then, with the construction of the Brudermühl Tunnel in 1989, the bridge underwent another transformation. Today, Brudermühlsteg is a wide beam bridge, spanning approximately 40 meters in length and an impressive 60 meters in width. This breadth accommodates not just the six lanes of the main Brudermühlstraße. It also carries the four lanes of the two access ramps that lead to and from the Brudermühl Tunnel, a key part of Munich’s Mittlerer Ring. As you stand on the Brudermühlsteg, look towards the east. You can see the Flaucher park stretching out. Look west, and the cityscape unfolds, a testament to the bridge’s integral role in connecting Munich’s vibrant neighborhoods. This unassuming bridge holds a piece of Munich’s heart. It whispers tales of feuding brothers, wartime resilience, and the city’s constant evolution. So, next time you cross the Brudermühlsteg, remember the stories it holds. They echo in the gentle flow of the Großes Stadtbach below.
