Behold the Nichiren Shonin bronze statue. It stands tall in Higashi Park Hakata Ward Fukuoka.

This magnificent statue is a testament to history and faith. It commemorates Nichiren Shonin a pivotal Buddhist monk. He founded the Nichiren sect during the Kamakura period. The statue’s imposing height approximately 10.66 meters makes it one of Japan’s largest bronze statues. Only the Great Buddhas of Nara and Kamakura surpass it in size.

Legend says Nichiren Shonin accurately predicted two Yuan army invasions. His predictions were detailed in the Rissho Ankokuron scroll. The statue holds this very scroll in its left hand. A prayer bead rests in its right hand. The statue’s location in Higashi Park is significant. This park was the site of ancient battles. The statue serves as a tribute to the war dead and a prayer for lasting peace.

The statue’s creation was a monumental undertaking. Its construction started in April 1892. It was finally completed in 1904. A grand unveiling ceremony followed on November 8th of that year. The design was masterminded by Tenshin Okakura. The actual bronze casting was a complex process. It involved multiple bronze pieces meticulously joined together. The total weight of this majestic figure is a staggering 75 tons.

Notice the statue’s intricate details. The sculptor masterfully depicted Nichiren Shonin’s serene expression. The folds of his robes the texture of his prayer beads all are rendered with remarkable skill. The statue’s presence adds a profound sense of calm and reflection to the park.
