What if the stones beneath our feet could whisper tales of volcanic creation? Here at Mirador del Risco de las Peñas, they almost do. This natural balcony invites you to contemplate the grand geology of Fuerteventura.

Located 444 meters above sea level in Pájara, the Mirador del Risco de las Peñas surprises with its panoramic views. From this strategic point, you can observe the valley and the Granadillos orchard.

The Mirador del Risco de las Peñas divides Betancuria and Pájara. It sits on a hill near the Mirador de Las Peñitas. Thanks to its privileged location, you can admire some of Fuerteventura’s most beautiful landscapes.

From the panoramic point to the right, you can see the Valley and the Granadillos orchard. This area reveals plutonic rocks like gabbros and syenites, plus volcanic trachytes. On the other side, observe terraces and building remains. These remnants recall a past era dedicated to Majorcan agriculture.

In the distance to the right, you’ll spot the Peñitas Dam. It was built between 1939 and 1943 for agricultural purposes. In front of us lies the Risco de las Peñitas. This syenite formation is part of a ring of plutonic rocks with a circular outcrop.

On the left side is the Fénduca Valley. It flows into the Ajuy Ravine. You can see various types of crops. They exemplify Fuerteventura’s past agriculture.

At 292 meters altitude, we can see the Atalayeja or Montaña de la teta. Its final meters form a basaltic rock. These are the remains of one of the largest volcanoes on the island of Majorca.

North of this gorge, observe the aridity of the hills of the Basal Complex. They give way to the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Risco de Las Peñas boasts natural richness with varied fauna and flora. Among the fauna are endemic species. One peculiarity is that it’s a transition zone between dry and humid climates.

Animal species at Risco de las Peñas include the raven, common kestrel, hoopoe, and more. You might spot the Iberian grey shrike, Canary Island chiffchaff, or trumpeter finch.

The natural beauty includes vegetation like hawthorn and Cuernúa. You will also see Verode, asparagus, and Jorjao. Cardo, Ramalina spp, and Xantoria spp are also present.

To reach this breathtaking viewpoint, take the FV-30 from Puerto del Rosario towards Betancuria. After passing the Mirador de Las Peñitas, you’ll soon find the Mirador del Risco de las Peñas. Coming from the south, take the FV-30 from Pájara. The viewpoint is next to a small roundabout marking the entrance to Pájara.

The pass height Degollada de los Granadillos rises with the Mirador del Risco de las Peñas. From here, you can overlook the western part of the island. Admire the picturesque landscape of the valley below. Terraced fields, extinct lava flows, and surrounding mountain ranges create an impressive backdrop.

A hiking trail leads to the Ermita de la Peña. This tiny white chapel sits directly on a cliff. From there, continue down into the valley to Vega de Río de las Palmas. The viewpoint is on the right side of the road. Parking spaces are nearby.

Gaze out from Mirador del Risco de las Peñas. Let the ancient volcanic landscape remind you of nature’s enduring power and beauty.
