In the heart of Dazaifu, the Chikuzen Kokubun-ji Site whispers tales of ancient Japan. The Chikuzen Kokubun-ji, a significant Buddhist temple, stands as a testament to Emperor Shomu’s vision. In 741, amidst a devastating smallpox epidemic, Emperor Shomu decreed the construction of provincial temples and nunneries throughout Japan. These kokubunji temples, including the Chikuzen Kokubun-ji, served as spiritual anchors. They symbolized the power of the centralized government. Chikuzen Kokubun-ji sits on a plateau northwest of the Dazaifu Government Office ruins. The modern temple overlaps the ruins of its Nara-period predecessor. The original temple compound was an impressive 192 meters square. It housed a central gate, main hall, auditorium, and cloisters. Interestingly, the five-story pagoda was enclosed within the cloister. This layout differed from the standard kokubun-ji design. The pagoda itself underwent renovations in the 9th century. Its foundations were changed from buried pillars to rough stone. It seems to have vanished by the 10th century, followed by the lecture hall in the 11th century. The Chikuzen Kokubun-ji holds a precious artifact. A wooden statue of Yakushi Nyorai, carved during the Muromachi period, is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. While the temple faded from records for centuries after the 10th century, it was revived in the Edo period. The main hall tragically burned down in 1827, but the Kuri was rebuilt in 1833. The Chikuzen Kokubun-ji Site continues to resonate with history. It offers a glimpse into the spiritual and political landscape of ancient Japan.
