Mandai

Deep within the heart of Singapore’s North Region lies Mandai, a planning area teeming with more than just lush greenery. Mandai is famously known as the gateway to the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. This incredible reserve houses the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, and the upcoming Rainforest Wild. But Mandai holds more than just wildlife wonders. The Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium, the largest of its kind in Singapore, also calls this area home. Mandai is a place of diverse landscapes, encompassing the Sembawang Hot Springs and the Sembawang Golf Course. Mandai’s history is as rich as its biodiversity. The name itself, appearing on maps as early as 1828, is thought to be derived from either a local Malay tree, the “pokok Mandai,” or the Malay word “mandi,” meaning “to bathe.” This hints at the Mandai River’s possible historical use. The area is divided into three subzones: Mandai East, Mandai West, and Mandai Estate. This division helps with statistical and planning purposes. Interestingly, Mandai has also played a role in Singapore’s military history. Several areas within Mandai, such as Kwok Min and Mandai Bumbong, have served as military training grounds. However, with the exciting redevelopment of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, these training areas (excluding Sembawang Air Base and Chong Pang Camp) are being relocated to Lim Chu Kang and Pulau Tekong. Mandai’s transformation doesn’t stop there. The Mass Rapid Transit system’s Mandai Depot, crucial for the Thomson-East Coast Line, is located here. This further enhances Mandai’s accessibility and connection to the rest of Singapore. Mandai’s evolution from a quiet area with military training grounds to a hub for wildlife and accessible transport showcases Singapore’s innovative approach to urban development. It’s a place where history, nature, and progress intertwine, offering a truly unique Singaporean experience.
