How did a family from New England end up shaping education in Norridge? Right here in front of us stands Pennoyer Elementary School. Their commitment to education was evident from the very beginning. In 1838, John Pennoyer, the patriarch of the family opened his home to discuss the need for a school. Can you imagine that, a school starting in someone’s house? A year later, the first classes were held right there in the Pennoyer home with family members serving as the first teachers. John Pennoyer then donated a parcel of his land, and in 1841, a proper one-room schoolhouse was built, known as the James M. Pennoyer School, a tribute to John’s son.
