Looking down at the square from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, wouldn’t it be hard to believe that a small, secluded square sits tucked away in the centre of the city? It’s this little space, filled with lush greenery and a bustling Parisian air that is home to the Pierre-Jean de Béranger Statue. Pierre-Jean de Béranger was a French songwriter from the 19th century. He was a prolific and acclaimed songwriter that became known and loved for his ability to turn the every-day into something poetic. His songs captured the essence of the people, celebrating their joy and lamenting their struggles. This statue, constructed in 1953 by none other than Henri Lagriffoul, commemorates his profound impact on French culture. It’s not the first statue to honour Béranger in this square, though, but it is the one we see today. Previous statues were made of bronze, with the second one being melted down during the war. Our statue is carved from stone, ensuring its longevity for generations to come.
