What if kindness built a temple? Here at Bao’En Old Temple in Shanghai that’s almost literally what happened.

Bao’En Old Temple. Its name whispers of gratitude and ancient trees. The temple was built during the Ming Dynasty. It was originally named “Ci Zi An”. The temple is in Fengxian District, Qingcun Town. Later it was renamed and restored as a religious activity site.

Step closer and feel the serenity. Imagine the temple in its prime. Ancient trees tower around you. The Bao’En Hall stands solemn. It is in memory of ancestors. The air is thick with history here.

But there’s more than just history. There is love. Zhi Xiang is the abbot of Bao’En Temple. He is doing something special. He takes in stray animals. This act fills the temple with love and warmth. It makes this temple worth visiting.

One of the highlights is a 450-year-old Ginkgo tree. It dates back to the Ming Dynasty. It is one of Shanghai’s famous ancient trees. Can you imagine what that tree has seen?

The story of Zhi Xiang is especially moving. Since 1993 he started saving stray animals. His compassion led him to rescue countless creatures. In the beginning he would bury dead animals he found. If they had survived, he paid to sterilize them and then set them free afterwards.

In 2006 Zhi Xiang came to Bao’en Temple. He wanted to escape the bustle of the city. The temple was short-staffed.

He didn’t like to promote himself. But he knew the animals needed help. In 2017 he accepted his first donation. Before that he said people should donate supplies. He kept the animals at Bao’En Old Temple. At one point he had dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, geese and a peacock. But the temple was too small.

He rescues dogs from public shelters. Without his help many would be put down. He gives them medicine and vaccines. Saving lives is part of his faith.

Take a moment to appreciate this blend of history. Feel the compassion. Bao’En Old Temple isn’t just a temple. It’s a sanctuary of gratitude and kindness. A unique landmark in Shanghai.
