Gazing across the Marne, the Pont de Maisons-Alfort stands as a testament to time and progress. This steel arch bridge, completed in 1912, gracefully connects Joinville-le-Pont to Maisons-Alfort. Pont de Maisons-Alfort is more than just a crossing. It’s a twin, a near replica of the Pont du Petit Parc in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, built just a year earlier. The key difference? The unique ornaments adorning the central stone pillar of Pont de Maisons-Alfort. Look closely at that central pillar. Notice the prominent “RF” escutcheon, a symbol of the French Republic. Now, cast your gaze towards the Maisons-Alfort side of Pont de Maisons-Alfort. There you’ll find the Maison de l’Octroi, a small building erected simultaneously with the bridge. This unassuming structure served a specific purpose. It was here that the communal octroi, a tax on goods entering the commune, was collected. Imagine the bustling activity as merchants paid their dues, contributing to the local coffers. This practice continued until 1948 when the French government abolished the octroi system. The Maison de l’Octroi, a silent witness to this era, received a new lease on life through restoration work in 2020. Pont de Maisons-Alfort has faced its share of challenges. In the night between October 20th and 21st, 2023, disaster struck. A 400mm water pipe ruptured near the bridge, causing widespread flooding. Imagine the scene: five cars trapped in the rising waters, a torrent of water engulfing the roadway. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the incident underscored the fragility of urban infrastructure. The bridge was closed for several weeks, impacting traffic flow and daily commutes. Extensive repairs were needed, causing significant disruptions to the area. The Pont de Maisons-Alfort, however, persevered. Today, it stands as a vital artery, connecting communities and carrying the weight of history, progress, and even occasional adversity.
