Lost in the heart of Fukuoka, amid a vibrant tapestry of green, lies a treasure waiting to be discovered: the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden. Established in 1953 at its current location, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden has blossomed into a beloved landmark.
Originally, the gardens found their humble beginnings near the city’s East park in 1933. They were founded to celebrate Emperor Hirohito’s coronation. This original space held around 500 animals and 100 plant species. The ravages of World War II forced its closure in 1944. Large animals were euthanized during that time. But the spirit of the garden lived on.
After the war, the city decided to establish a new zoo in South park. In 1952, the Fukuoka City Zoological Society gathered funds for the project. On August 22, 1953, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden reopened in its present location. It began with 143 animals representing 69 species.
The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden grew quickly. By 1954, it expanded northward. The animal collection grew to 353 individuals from 110 species. More land was added, and the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden housed 400 animals of 120 species in 1956.
Today, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden is home to about 700 animals of 160 species. It also has about 1,300 types of outdoor plants. The greenhouse shelters over 1,200 plant species. You’ll find orchids, ferns, and cacti there.
The rose garden is very popular. It features 1,300 roses of about 280 varieties. Spring and autumn offer the best views. Spring brings many large flowers. Autumn offers rich, vibrant colors.
