What appears to be a simple wooden structure out at sea is the Port Melbourne Front Light. The Port Melbourne Front Light may seem unassuming but it holds a significant place in maritime history. Today, we’ll delve into the story of this beacon. We will discover its role in guiding ships and its enduring connection to Port Melbourne.

Built in 1924, the Port Melbourne Front Light worked with another light to guide ships. Together, these lights marked the center of the Port Melbourne Channel. This channel leads from Port Phillip Bay into the port. Think of them as a nautical GPS. They ensured vessels stayed on course.

The Port Melbourne Front Light is a round and tapered wooden-framed structure. It sits on piles out in the water. A narrow wooden footbridge once connected it to the shore. Unfortunately, that bridge fell into disrepair and was removed.

Once upon a time, the Port Melbourne Front Light displayed a fixed green light. This light shone over a 26-degree sector. A second green light flashed every six seconds. This helped mark the channel’s center. Sadly, the light is no longer in use.

The rear light is a 26-meter concrete tower. It stands 500 meters north of the Port Melbourne Front Light. The rear light’s main beam is red. It flashes every six seconds. Below it, a directional light operates 24 hours a day. This directional light uses green, white, and red sectors. These colors precisely marked the channel’s center. The arc of this light is particularly narrow. It spans only 1.5 degrees.

Interestingly, the Port Melbourne Front Light and its counterpart were built to a Trinity House lighthouse design. This is despite the calm waters of Hobsons Bay. The reason for this design choice remains a mystery.

Over time, the area around the lighthouses transformed. The old industrial port made way for the Beacon Cove housing estate. Thankfully, the lighthouses were preserved. They became a focal point of the new development. The streetscape was designed to maintain a perfect line of sight between the lights.

The community rallied to protect these beacons during redevelopment. Dianne Reilly Drury, a local librarian, championed their heritage listing. In 1995, the Leading Lights joined the Victorian Heritage Register. Their unique form and placement cemented their importance.

Today, the Port Melbourne Front Light is a cherished landmark. It is a popular subject for photographers. Its steady presence is a reassuring constant for residents and visitors alike. The Port Melbourne Front Light stands as a reminder of Port Melbourne’s maritime past. It shows how important it was in guiding ships safely to port.
