This empty lot, once a bustling medical center, is all that remains of Former Michael Reese Hospital. It’s hard to imagine the place teeming with doctors, nurses, and patients. But within these very walls, history was made. Michael Reese, a real estate developer, left a fortune to build a new hospital in Chicago. His wish was that the hospital would be open to all people, regardless of creed, nationality, or race. It was completed in 1880. It stands as a reminder of an era marked by remarkable medical breakthroughs. The hospital housed the first motorized ambulance service in the United States. The electric vehicle was powered by a 44-cell battery and could travel up to 25 miles. They also had the first permanent incubator station for premature babies in 1922. In its later years, the hospital became a center for research. It experienced financial difficulties and eventually closed in 2009. Now, only the faint echoes of its past remain. Today, the site is being redeveloped into a mixed-use community that will include residential, retail, and office space. However, you can still see traces of its impressive history. The main hospital building was demolished, but its original 1907 Prairie-style building, designed by Schmidt, Garden & Martin, still endures.
