Did the vibrant Pentecostal flames ignite right here at the Magyar Pünkösdi Egyház? Let’s explore this fascinating story together. The Magyar Pünkösdi Egyház, or MPE, stands as a testament to the Pentecostal movement’s journey in Hungary. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the global Pentecostal awakening of the early 20th century. The MPE traces its roots back to 1921, when Hungarian emigrants returned from America, bringing with them the fervor of the Pentecostal revival. Joseph Szalai and his wife, having experienced this revival firsthand, returned to their village of Darány. They shared their newfound faith, leading to regular gatherings marked by spiritual enthusiasm. Hungary’s first Pentecostal prayer house was built in Darány in 1926, a precursor to the Magyar Pünkösdi Egyház. Another key figure, Imre Mihók, further propelled the movement after his return from Detroit in 1926. He spread the Pentecostal message across the Bakony region, contributing significantly to the movement’s growth. The formal establishment of the Magyar Pünkösdi Egyház came in 1928. Initially known as “Hungarian Assemblies of God”, the organization held its first conference in Kispest. By 1932, under the name “Association of Assemblies of God in Hungary”, it encompassed seventy congregations. However, a government decree in 1939, targeting sects deemed a threat to national defense, banned Pentecostal worship services. The MPE found refuge under the protection of larger denominations like the Lutheran, Baptist, and Methodist churches. This period shaped the future of the movement, leading to its diversification into various Pentecostal denominations. The Magyar Pünkösdi Egyház’s story is one of resilience. It faced suppression, adapted to challenging circumstances, and ultimately emerged as a unified force in 2011. Today, the MPE, with its headquarters in Budapest, continues to be a vibrant part of Hungary’s religious landscape. It stands as a reminder of the power of faith and the enduring spirit of the Pentecostal movement. This church, the Magyar Pünkösdi Egyház, is more than just a building. It represents a journey of faith, resilience, and the ongoing legacy of the Pentecostal revival in Hungary.
