Here stands the Padre Carlos Mugica Plaque a somber testament to a life dedicated to the poor. This plaque isn’t just a piece of metal. It marks the spot where a priest a champion of the downtrodden met a tragic end. Father Carlos Mugica a man from a privileged background chose a different path. He dedicated himself to the poor in Buenos Aires’s working-class neighborhoods. His sermons on Municipal Radio resonated with the marginalized. He became a voice for the voiceless.

Mugica’s work extended beyond the pulpit. He taught theology child psychology and law at the Universidad del Salvador. He even worked as a chaplain in a charitable institution in a slum near the port. He was a bridge between Catholics and Marxists. He hosted a symposium on the very topic. He boldly challenged the status quo. His outspokenness didn’t win him friends among the powerful.

His activism earned him enemies. His support for the Peronist movement made him a target. Conservative newspapers accused him of justifying violence. The State Intelligence placed him under surveillance. A bomb even exploded near his parents’ apartment. He remained steadfast. He declared that nothing would stop him from serving Christ and fighting alongside the poor.

Despite his growing popularity and even a consultation position under Peron’s government Mugica eventually broke ties. He clashed with both the archdiocese and the Peronist government. He didn’t shy away from criticizing their violence. His commitment to the poor ultimately cost him his life.

On May 11 1974 after celebrating Mass at the San Francisco Solano Parish an agent of the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance fired five shots into him. He died shortly after. His last words to a nurse were Now more than ever we must be with the people.

This plaque commemorates his sacrifice. It reminds us of his unwavering dedication. It calls us to reflect on the injustices he fought against. The Padre Carlos Mugica Plaque is more than a historical marker. It’s a symbol of faith courage and enduring commitment to the marginalized. It is a call to action. Let us remember Father Mugica and his legacy.
