Picture a space where the aroma of Ayam Panggang once mingled with the excited chatter of students. That place is Techno Edge at the National University of Singapore. It is more than just a canteen. Techno Edge is a hub of student life.
Techno Edge underwent a significant transformation. For 30 years, it served as the NUS Engineering canteen. In 2018, it closed for redevelopment. The goal was to create a future integrated student hub. The revamped Techno Edge reopened in January 2021. Students who had known the old canteen flocked to see the changes.
Before its renovation, Techno Edge was a beloved spot. During its two-year closure, students missed it. Many went to the Arts canteen causing overcrowding. The original Techno Edge had a minor renovation in 1999. The 2018 project was long overdue.
The redevelopment of Techno Edge aimed to integrate the building with its surroundings. Its design responds to the verdant landscape. It sits between the School of Engineering and the School of Design and Environment. The building weaves in and out of the landscape. Continuous sun and rain shades emphasize its curves. The organic edge is designed around rain trees. Elevating the canteen provides panoramic views of the green canopies.
Many remember the vendors of the old Techno Edge fondly. Mr Ching served chicken rice since 1974. Mr Pang and Alice ran the Yong Tau Foo stall for 31 years. Alice even won a cooking competition judged by celebrity chef Violet Oon in 2016. Uncle Henry worked at the McDonald’s there for nine years. The drinks stall was famous for its “Campus Best Milk Tea”.
When Techno Edge reopened it featured 12 food stalls. Five were returning operators. These included Western Fare, Vegetarian Food, and Indian Cuisine. New stalls included Nasi Padang and Mala Hotpot. There was also an air-conditioned segment with Hungry Burger and Hong Kong Cafe.
NUS paid tribute to Techno Edge on Facebook before its closure. The post shared stories of the long-serving staff. Some had worked there for around 30 years or longer. The canteen staff even built a fund for festive decorations.
