Nestled on the vibrant İstiklal Avenue, Saint Augustine Kilisesi stands as a testament to Istanbul’s rich and diverse history. Saint Augustine Kilisesi, also known as Sant’Antonio di Padova, isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s the largest Catholic church in Istanbul, a beacon for the Italian community that has called this city home for centuries. The striking red brick facade, a blend of Neo-Gothic and Tuscan-Lombard styles, hints at the church’s intriguing past. The current Saint Augustine Kilisesi, completed in 1912, replaced an older structure originally built in 1725. That earlier church, sadly, was demolished to make way for a modern tramway. But from its ashes rose this magnificent structure, designed by the talented Levantine architect Giulio Mongeri. He also designed other notable buildings in Istanbul, like the Maçka Palas and the Karaköy Palas bank building. Mongeri’s Saint Augustine Kilisesi is a true architectural gem. Inside, the church’s grandeur continues with its high ceilings, intricate details, and peaceful atmosphere. Saint Augustine Kilisesi also holds a unique connection to a prominent figure in Catholic history. Pope John XXIII, known as “the Turkish Pope” for his Turkish fluency and love for Istanbul, preached here for ten years before his papacy. A statue of him stands in the courtyard, a reminder of his time at Saint Augustine Kilisesi and his special relationship with Turkey. Today, Saint Augustine Kilisesi remains a vibrant center of worship. Italian priests conduct services, offering mass in several languages including English, Italian, Polish, and Turkish. The church’s doors are open to all, welcoming visitors to experience its beauty and history. This blend of history, architectural beauty, and religious significance makes Saint Augustine Kilisesi a must-see in Istanbul.
