How about a place where young women find not just a room but a sisterhood? That’s the Scottish Rite Dormitory. Right here on 27th Street this Austin landmark offers so much history.

The Scottish Rite Dormitory is a private residence for women attending the University of Texas. It is managed by the Scottish Rite branch of Freemasons. This beautiful building addresses a campus housing shortage. It first opened in 1922.

Initially, the Scottish Rite Dormitory aimed to house daughters and relatives of Master Masons. Over time, the rules have loosened but some strict regulations remain. Male guest visits are limited to specific hours. Demand is high. Many students join the waiting list in high school. The residents are affectionately called “SaRDines”.

Interestingly young men work here too. They are hired for food service roles. This is a tradition. Can you imagine the stories shared over plates of Chocolate Crumble Balls?

Speaking of food stereotypes about dorm food don’t apply here. The Scottish Rite Dormitory is praised for its culinary offerings. Former residents often recall the high quality of meals. The kitchen staff prepares special treats for birthdays pajama parties and the annual spring formal.

Herbert Miller Greene a Dallas architect and Mason designed the Scottish Rite Dormitory. In the early 1920s he was appointed as the official architect for the University of Texas. He designed several campus buildings in a Mediterranean-influenced Beaux-Arts style. In 1998 the Scottish Rite Dormitory was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This recognized its historical significance.

The Scottish Rite Dormitory is more than just a place to sleep. It’s a transitional space. It bridges the gap between a woman’s childhood home and the adult world. Though originally for relatives of Master Masons the dorm now welcomes a diverse group of students.

The grand living room was designed for socializing. Women visit study and share stories there. Staff members truly care about every girl. They want them to feel at home.

The Scottish Rite Dormitory hosts many events. There is an annual Christmas celebration. Also a Valentine’s dance is given as well as barbecues and shrimp boils throughout the year.
