Whispers of history linger here at Jalan Kubor Cemetery. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s the oldest Muslim burial ground in Singapore. Generations have rested here. Their stories etched into weathered tombstones.

Jalan Kubor Cemetery wasn’t always one place. It started as three separate plots. One was for Malay royalty. Another was for commoners. A third was for Indian Muslims. They eventually merged. Creating the sprawling cemetery we see today.

Imagine the Johor-Riau royal family. Their palace nearby in Kampong Gelam. Descendants of Sultans Hussein and Ali are buried here. Though the Sultans themselves rest in Melaka. The Royal Mound stands tall. A raised enclosure. Bright yellow walls. Yellow cloths drape the stones marking royal graves.

Next to the royalty lies the Indian Muslim section. Now known as the Tittacheri Muslim Cemetery and Mosque. The mosque still stands. A testament to faith and enduring community.

The Malay burial ground was gifted in 1852. Syed Omar Aljunied a wealthy merchant donated it. He was a philanthropist. A successful businessman. His Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah stands nearby. A school he founded. He and his descendants are buried here.

The stones tell many tales. Arabic Malay Javanese Bugis Aksara English Mandarin and Gujarati inscriptions. A reflection of Singapore’s rich cultural tapestry.

By the mid-1800s the cemetery was overcrowded. The smell was overpowering. The royal plot closed in 1875. The Malay plot followed in 1901. The Indian Muslim plot remained open until after World War II. Its last burial in 1963.

Today Jalan Kubor Cemetery is peaceful. Tree roots wrap around headstones. Grass grows on the steps to the Royal Mound. Yet the cemetery endures. A silent witness to Singapore’s past. A reminder of the lives lived and lost within these hallowed grounds. A place to reflect. To remember. To honor the stories etched in stone.
