Beneath this temple’s majestic roof lies a tale of resilience. Welcome to Changshou Chan Temple one of Shanghai’s eight famous temples. Built during the Southern Song Dynasty the temple has seen centuries pass. It has witnessed periods of splendor and endured profound changes.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine the Qiandao period from 1165 to 1173. Changshou Chan Temple emerged as a beacon of faith. For over 800 years it stood as a testament to the enduring spirit of Buddhism in Shanghai.
However the winds of change brought trials. In 1971 the temple was repurposed. It became a warehouse. Monks of Changshou Chan Temple found refuge in an abandoned school building in Duxing. Despite these challenges their faith remained unshaken.
Fast forward to July 6 2006. The Minhang District government decided to restore Changshou Temple. On August 1 2007 the Shanghai Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission approved the temple’s reconstruction. It was to be at the intersection of Luchuan Road and Zhangxing Road in Duxing Town. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 17 2010. The ancient temple was revived by Master Yaowei. He rebuilt it on the site of the East Temple and renamed it Changshou Zen Temple.
As you explore Changshou Zen Temple note its architectural grandeur. Though not expansive the buildings are tall. They create an atmosphere of solemnity. The temple features several halls including the Mahavira Hall and the God of Wealth Hall. Three-story buildings with flying eaves stand on the east and west sides. They offer excellent photo opportunities.
Don’t miss the koi fish in the pond. Besides the Buddha these colorful fish are an integral part of the temple’s charm. It is believed that the koi fish bring good luck.
