Isn’t it remarkable how faith finds its place even amidst the most industrious landscapes? Right here, before the Iglesia Salinas del Carmen, a small sanctuary stands near Caleta de Fuste. It is a testament to devotion in this village of Las Salinas del Carmen.

The Iglesia Salinas del Carmen is a relatively new construction. Bishop Francisco Cases authorized it for worship in the summer of 2009. Imagine the joy of the locals as they finally had their own church. For years they may have traveled to other towns. Now they could gather here for mass, celebrations, and quiet reflection.

Step inside and you will notice a beautiful stained glass window. This is no ordinary window. José Escamendi, a glassmaker from Gran Canaria, created it. He used the same methods that masters of the craft have used for centuries.

The stained glass window is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Carmen. It contains about 300 individual pieces of glass. These pieces fit together perfectly. Marine motifs adorn the glass. They reflect the church’s seaside location. The artist used top-quality materials. The glass was hand-blown and then tinted in special ovens at 800 degrees. This process fixed the colors and ornaments permanently.

Look closely at the leadwork. The lead holds the glass pieces together. Artisans manually crafted the lead using an alloy of lead and tin. The Iglesia de Las Salinas is unique. It is the only church in Fuerteventura with this type of ornamentation. It is a special feature.

The church comes alive every July 16th. The Festival in honor of the Virgen del Carmen takes place. The women of Las Salinas del Carmen dress in old-fashioned attire. For more than a decade they have carried the image of the Virgin. They carry it from the church to the beach. From there a maritime procession begins on a traditional boat.

After the sea procession, the women carry the Virgin back. They bring her to a stage near the beach. The offering takes place here. Locals give thanks. They celebrate their patron saint.

Las Salinas del Carmen offers more than just a church. The Salt Museum is also very close. The museum highlights the island’s salt production history. Salt production dates back to the 18th century. The museum showcases traditional methods of salt extraction. Visitors can tour the salt pans. They can observe the process firsthand. Salt was vital to Fuerteventura’s economy. It preserved fish and meat. This was essential for the local population and maritime trade.

Consider the location of the Iglesia Salinas del Carmen. It stands as a beacon of faith. It connects the community to its patron saint. It also connects to the sea. The stained glass reflects this bond. The annual festival is a vibrant expression of faith. It is a tribute to the Virgen del Carmen. The church is a cultural gem. It enriches the lives of the people of Fuerteventura.
