Across the Seine stands the Pont de Suresnes. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Parisian history. Think of the bustling activity. Imagine the sounds of carriages and horses.

The first Pont de Suresnes was a suspension bridge. Built in 1842 it connected the Bois de Boulogne to Suresnes. Its design was unique using flexible iron bands. Pedestrians paid a small fee. Carriages and animals paid more. Tolls caused arguments slowing the flow of traffic.

The bridge played a vital role. It linked a small village to the city. Suresnes grew. Factories and workshops appeared along the Seine. “Guinguettes” lively dance halls thrived. Workers and Parisians came to enjoy themselves.

Sadly the first Pont de Suresnes was destroyed. This happened during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Local legend says Suresnes residents set fire to it. Official records say it was a strategic decision. A temporary bridge of boats replaced it. Then another.

A metal bridge replaced the boats. Built in 1874 it soon proved too narrow. The increasing number of visitors to the nearby Longchamp racecourse created traffic problems. The bridge was widened between 1897 and 1901. Sculptures adorned its railings.

The present Pont de Suresnes followed. It was constructed in stages between 1938 and 1950. World War II delayed construction. This new bridge is a beautiful arc. It carries the Allée de Longchamp. It’s a major thoroughfare from the Bois de Boulogne into the western suburbs of Paris.

The Pont de Suresnes. It is more than a bridge. It’s a link. A connection between Paris and its suburbs. A symbol of constant change and adaptation. A testament to the resilience of Suresnes.
