“Four thousand students living together, can you imagine?” a girl whispered to her friend, gesturing towards University Town. University Town, often called UTown, is a vibrant hub of activity nestled within the National University of Singapore. Officially opened in August 2011, this 19-hectare space isn’t just about academics. It’s a microcosm of student life, designed to foster connections between students and faculty. University Town houses four undergraduate residential colleges and a graduate residence. These colleges offer more than just accommodation. They’re designed to create a sense of community, with shared spaces encouraging interaction and collaboration. University Town boasts a diverse range of facilities, including classrooms, arts venues, sports facilities, and even Singapore’s largest Starbucks. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong even joked about this at the opening ceremony. Think of UTown as a mini-city within a city. It has everything a student could need, from a bookshop and pharmacy to restaurants and a mini-mart. Students here aren’t just focused on their studies. The Capstone Programme, for instance, encourages community engagement. One project saw students collaborating with ITE College Central and a local community club. They developed a healthy eating programme for senior citizens. University Town is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where students live, learn, and grow. It’s a testament to NUS’s commitment to creating a holistic learning environment, fostering not only academic excellence, but also community spirit and active citizenship.
