Considering a journey back in time to a village that faced raiding knights? Today, we find ourselves in Delkenheim. It is a district of Wiesbaden, Germany. Delkenheim may seem like a quiet locale now but its history is rich and eventful.

Delkenheim’s story begins long before its first documented mention in 1204. Historians believe settlement started as early as the 6th century. This was during the migration period when the Franks took land.

In 1320, Delkenheim received town rights from King Ludwig der Baiern. However, Delkenheim’s early history is marked by turbulence. A knight’s castle once stood as its center. This castle met a fiery end in 1372. Rheingau mercenaries burned it down, hired by Mainz and Frankfurt. It is thought this was revenge against Delkenheim’s infamous robber knights. The neighbors had enough of the robber knights. Delkenheim continued to face attacks even after that.

Life improved for Delkenheim’s citizens after the robber knight era ended. The first schoolmaster, Kilian Mohr, was appointed in 1655. This allowed the local children to get lessons. Landgrave Ernst Ludwig von Eppstein encouraged agriculture, viticulture, and livestock breeding. The foundation stone for the new parish house was laid in 1773. Delkenheim finally received water pipes in 1959.

Delkenheim lost its municipal independence during the Hessian regional reform. On January 1, 1977, it was incorporated into Wiesbaden. Before that, it belonged to the Main-Taunus district. Despite this change, Delkenheim retains a strong local identity. An advisory council and a local head were established for the district.

Delkenheim continues to cherish its heritage. In 1998, an excavation in Landwehrstrasse unearthed a 1,300-year-old skeleton. They nicknamed the skeleton “Delki”. You can see “Delki” today in the local history museum.

Delkenheim’s coat of arms has a black mark in the shape of a cross. The upper bar is split in a V-shape. The Hessian Minister of the Interior approved it in 1960.

The old town center has beautiful timber-framed houses. One notable place is the “Zur Mühle” tavern. It has been lovingly renovated. The Evangelical Church is also worth seeing. People call it the “Ländchesdom”. Architect Ludwig Hofmann designed it. The foundation stone was laid in 1893 and it opened in 1894. The church replaced an old, dilapidated one.

Delkenheim also includes the Mechtildshausen estate. It was first mentioned in the 12th century. Today, it houses the Wiesbaden youth workshop and a restaurant.

The “Theatergruppe Delkenheim” is known beyond the town. Each year, they perform two plays. In spring, they do a boulevard piece. Before Christmas, they perform a Christmas fairy tale. The audience includes people of all ages. The performances take place in the Delkenheim community center.

The Delkenheim Kerb or fair takes place every year in mid-September. It happens in the community center and on the fairground below.

Despite its charm, Delkenheim faces modern challenges. Residents deal with noise from Frankfurt Airport and the A 66 and A 3 highways. A noise barrier was built on Landesstrasse 3028 in 2011. It only protects part of the nearby residential area because of budget issues.

As you leave Delkenheim, remember its journey. From early settlements to raiding knights to modern-day challenges, Delkenheim has retained its unique spirit. The people of Delkenheim continue to shape its identity within the larger city of Wiesbaden.
