Gazing at Saint Thomas the Apostle, one can almost hear the echoes of its rich history. Saint Thomas the Apostle has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. It was established in 1908 by Archbishop John Ireland. Originally, the church was situated at 44th Street and York. It shared its space with the Minneapolis Friends Meeting House and a synagogue. The parish later acquired land along 44th Street, between Upton and Washburn Avenues. In 1925, Saint Thomas the Apostle School opened its doors. That same year, on Christmas Eve, the first mass was held in the new church building. This building was initially intended as the school’s auditorium. A separate church facing Upton Avenue was planned. However, the 1929 stock market crash and the subsequent Great Depression derailed these plans. The church where mass is still celebrated was designed by parishioner and architect Joseph Victor Vanderbilt. His “Italian Romanesque” design was lauded for its “dignified simplicity”. Saint Thomas the Apostle continued to flourish alongside the growth of Southwest Minneapolis in the early 20th century. By 1992, the school faced declining enrollment due to smaller families and rising parochial education costs. This led to a collaboration with Christ the King, combining their elementary schools. This joint effort was renamed Carondelet Catholic School in 2003. This honored the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the original teachers in both schools. The church itself underwent renovations in 2000 and 2001. The altar was moved to the center, carpeting and the choir loft were removed, and wooden chairs replaced plastic ones. A gathering space was added to the front, and an elevator improved accessibility. Today, Saint Thomas the Apostle is a vibrant community, home to over 900 households and the Carondelet Catholic School with over 400 students. Saint Thomas the Apostle continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community. Its history is etched in its very foundation.
