Legend says King Henry VIII anxiously awaited news of Anne Boleyn’s execution here. We are standing on King Henry VIII’s Mound. But truth mixes with time creating a hazy past. This spot offers more than just royal whispers. It’s a journey through ages.

King Henry VIII’s Mound is a protected scheduled monument. Its story stretches back millennia. Historians believe this mound may be a prehistoric round barrow. Imagine people building it between 2400 and 1500 BC. That’s from the Late Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age. These barrows were funerary monuments. They held single or multiple burials. King Henry VIII’s Mound is rare in Greater London.

Its royal connection is captivating even if embellished. The tale says that on May 19 1536 King Henry VIII watched from here. He awaited a rocket signal from the Tower of London. It would confirm Anne Boleyn’s execution. This cleared his path to marry Jane Seymour. The truth? King Henry VIII was likely in Wiltshire.

Regardless of the legend the mound was significant. In 1630 a map called it “Kings Standinge”. This was a platform to watch hunts. King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I hunted in Richmond Park. King Henry VII even built a royal palace here naming it after his Yorkshire estate.

Later the mound became part of Pembroke Lodge’s gardens. Prime Minister Lord John Russell lived here in the 19th century. Today Richmond Park is Grade I-listed. The Royal Parks manage it.

King Henry VIII’s Mound offers protected views. You can see St Paul’s Cathedral. Windsor Castle and the Thames Valley are also visible.

Archaeological surveys found little proof of prehistoric origin. The mound’s location and ashes discovered hint at it. The mound is roughly circular and flat-topped. It stands about 6 meters high. Modern paths surround it. A path leads to the summit. From the east the mound is about 1.5 meters high with trees planted on the summit.
