Imagine the year is 1874. A wave of German immigrants washes over Jefferson Township near Chicago. They seek a new life. They also yearn for the familiar comfort of their Lutheran faith. The nearest church is miles away. So they build their own. That is the beginning of Saint John the Divine Lutheran Church.
Saint John’s humble beginnings are marked by a small frame building. This simple structure stands in stark contrast to the magnificent edifice we see today. This first church served a small but devoted congregation. It was a testament to their faith and resilience. They persevered through challenging times.
Growth was inevitable. By 1890 the church had outgrown its original building. An addition was built. Seating capacity soared to 800. The first pipe organ filled the church with glorious music. Two school rooms were added. The dedication of this expansion marked a significant milestone. It showed the church’s commitment to education and community.
The early 1900s brought both expansion and division. A portion of the congregation peacefully separated. They formed their own church. Saint John’s continued to thrive. They purchased more land. A new parsonage replaced the old one. A new parish school was constructed with four classrooms a basement playroom and a heating plant.
Then came the 1920s and the dream of a truly grand church building. After years of planning the construction of the current church began in 1929. This beautiful building was completed in 1930. Its colored Indiana limestone gleams in the sunlight. The graceful tower topped with a cross stands tall. The intricate stonework is a testament to the artistry and dedication of its builders. The interior is light and airy. Beautiful stained glass windows bathe the space in color. Ornate woodwork decorates the ceiling. The altar niche pulpit and lectern are all exquisitely carved. The original bell from the first church still peals its invitation to worship.
Further additions followed. In 1957 the school was expanded and modernized. The Blanke Center was added in 1980. This created a true Christian educational complex. A major renovation project in 2000 included a new pipe organ.
Today Saint John the Divine Lutheran Church stands as a proud symbol of faith. It’s a place of worship learning and fellowship. The original spirit of those early German immigrants lives on.
