Did you know that Farumgård’s history stretches back to 1370? That’s when records first mention it as a farm belonging to the Bishop of Roskilde. It served as the administrative heart of their vast holdings around Farum Lynge and Lillerød. Imagine the Bishop’s stewards managing the land and resources from this very spot. Farumgård wasn’t just any farm though. It held a position of power and influence.
For a hundred years starting in 1456 members of the Skovgaard family held the estate. Then the Reformation arrived. This significant religious and political shift changed everything. The Crown seized Farumgård. The King then generously handed it out to various lower ranked officers and court officials. One such official in the 16th century even received funds to build a new half-timbered main building. Picture that construction bustling on this very land centuries ago. The building we see today however was quite a different affair.
In 1666 King Frederick III gifted Farumgård to Hans Svane a man who championed the introduction of the hereditary monarchy. Svane’s ownership was short-lived lasting only two years. After his death Farumgård passed through many hands. This continued until the 20th century. Most of the land was sold off in 1906. In 1910 Elisabeth Mozart Jensen a wealthy widow acquired the remaining house and land. She held it until her death in 1932. The German St Ursula Sisters then bought it transforming it into a recovery home. This lasted until 1960. It’s fascinating to imagine the different lives played out within these walls.
The current main building completed in 1705 is a testament to architectural elegance. François Dieussart designed it a renowned architect who simultaneously worked on Sorgenfri House. The building’s Rococo style is striking. Its three wings speak of grandeur and sophistication. Notice the park too covering six hectares. Elisabeth Mozart Jensen restored it to its original Baroque style in 1913. This stunning garden is one of Denmark’s finest examples of Baroque garden design. The park was protected in 1965 ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
Farumgård’s story continues to unfold. A recent legal battle highlights the ongoing tension between private ownership and public access. This conflict centers around the gardens and lakeside paths. Once open to the public this access was blocked in 2017. This led to a legal dispute a clash between conservation laws and the property owner’s rights. While the court initially sided with the owner the ongoing debate underscores the value of preserving this historical place and its accessibility.
