It begins on Rue des Alouettes opposite Rue des Lilas. Its southern end is blocked by the Lycée de la Martinière. Students from this prestigious school have a gate for exiting.

Impasse Baraille is more than just a passage. Initially named Rue des Lilas it acquired its current name in the 1930s. A letter dated February 16 1935 from the impasse’s owners to the city hall proposed the name Baraille. The identity of Baraille remains a mystery. Don’t confuse it with Rue Bataille near the Lycée Lumière.

The architecture of Impasse Baraille is charming. The buildings are white and angular. One building has a beautiful sloping design. This design brings it closer to the height of the houses that follow. The second part of the impasse is private. A barrier controls access. It serves around ten detached houses with gardens. These houses have one floor. Some are large with significant gardens. At the end the Martinière’s wall reveals large rectangular buildings.

The workers bustling about. The quiet lane now feels a world away from that busy past. Yet the echoes of their labor remain.
