“A sultan’s vow, twenty mosques or one?” I ask, gesturing towards the magnificent Ulu Cami. The Ulu Cami dominates Bursa’s skyline. It’s a testament to early Ottoman architecture and a historical cornerstone of the city. Sultan Bayezid I, flushed with victory at the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, vowed to build twenty mosques. Wise counsel prevailed, suggesting one grand mosque instead. And so, between 1396 and 1399, the Ulu Cami rose, a symbol of piety and pragmatism. Step inside, and you are enveloped by a forest of twenty domes, held aloft by twelve mighty columns. Imagine 5,000 souls gathered here in prayer, their voices echoing through this sacred space. Look up at the central dome. A shaft of light pours through a skylight, illuminating the ornate ablution fountain below. The fountain, with its eighteen corners, dates back to the 19th century, a more recent addition to this ancient structure. Ulu Cami is more than just a mosque. It is a calligraphy museum, its walls adorned with 192 monumental inscriptions, the work of 41 Ottoman calligraphers. These are not mere decorations, but expressions of faith. They showcase verses from the Quran, hadiths, the 99 names of Allah, and tributes to the Prophet Muhammad. Notice the mihrab, the niche indicating the direction of prayer. Crafted in 1572, its muqarnas canopy and gilded decoration whisper tales of devotion and artistry. Beside it stands the minbar, the pulpit. Constructed using the intricate kundekari technique, interlocking pieces of wood form a masterpiece of geometric and floral patterns. Now, a touch of astronomical intrigue. Legend has it that the minbar’s left panel depicts the planets of our solar system, including Pluto. A fascinating detail, considering Pluto wasn’t discovered until 1930, centuries after the minbar’s creation. While the scientific accuracy is debated, the artistic vision remains. As you leave the Ulu Cami, glance back at its two minarets, one attached to the mosque, the other standing apart, hinting at different construction periods. The Ulu Cami is not just a building; it is a living story. A story of faith, artistry, and the enduring legacy of the Ottoman Empire.
