High above the shimmering Adriatic stands Vila Čingrija. Its elegant silhouette seems to whisper secrets of a bygone era.
This isn’t just any villa. Vila Čingrija holds a significant place in Dubrovnik’s history. Built in 1914 it was the home of Melkior Melko Čingrija. He was the son of Pero Čingrija a highly influential Dubrovnik mayor. Pero was a renowned intellectual and a leading Dalmatian politician. The Čingrija family were one of Dubrovnik’s most respected families. Their legacy lives on in this very villa. For decades Vila Čingrija wasn’t just a home. It was the vibrant heart of Dubrovnik’s political social intellectual and artistic life.
But Vila Čingrija’s story isn’t all sunshine and roses. Its prime location attracted unwanted attention. Throughout its history various powerful figures including high-ranking military officials from different regimes resided here. This makes its history quite controversial. After 1945 the villa was nationalized. It became the property of the municipality. For many years it housed Dubrovnik’s HRT office. Time and neglect took their toll. The villa fell into disrepair.
Yet hope remained. After years of legal battles Dubrovnik’s city council purchased the villa in 2018. Extensive renovations transformed Vila Čingrija. Today it stands renewed. The villa now serves as Akademisi Čingrija. This is a training center for the Tourism and Hospitality School. It features modern facilities including a state-of-the-art kitchen and multimedia classrooms. Three luxurious apartments provide accommodation for students and visiting teachers.
Most exciting for the local community a restaurant will open to the public. It will seat 120 people inside and out. It offers breathtaking views. This restaurant isn’t just a business venture. It’s an integral part of the educational program. Students will gain practical experience by working there. This innovative approach is truly unique. The revitalized gardens surrounding the villa are now a testament to Dubrovnik’s commitment to its cultural heritage.
Vila Čingrija’s transformation is a story of resilience. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity beauty and history can endure. As you stand here today imagine the countless stories these walls have witnessed. Vila Čingrija is not just a building. It is a living testament to Dubrovnik’s rich past its vibrant present and its promising future.
