Driven by a vision of empowerment, Yayasan NYAU emerged from humble beginnings. It strives to uplift Indonesian communities from the clutches of poverty. Today we will explore the story of Yayasan NYAU.

Yayasan Usaha Mulia YUM also known as Foundation for Noble Work. It stands as a beacon of hope for children families and communities across Indonesia. YUM is dedicated to empowering them to rise above poverty. It recognizes that poverty is not just about money. It includes barriers to basic needs and a dignified life.

Indonesia has developed rapidly. Yet many areas still lack essential health education and community services. Millions struggle below the poverty line. They survive on less than two dollars each day. For over four decades YUM has been supporting these communities. It offers hope and a path out of poverty.

YUM’s deep understanding of community needs comes from years of experience. It has fostered strong relationships with the people it serves. It also has strong relationships with partners and institutions.

The story of Yayasan NYAU began in the late 1960s. Three social workers Wilbert Verheyen Sister Rina Ruigrok and Ibrohim Wessels started helping vulnerable communities in Jakarta. They established a mobile medical clinic. Later a small hospital served Jakarta’s poorest residents.

These three individuals were members of Subud. With Subud’s support Yayasan Usaha Mulia YUM was officially founded in 1975. Bapak Muhammad Subuh formally established YUM as a legal foundation in 1976. Its goal was to provide medical care social and educational instruction and occupational rehabilitation. These services were for the poor and destitute in Indonesia.

YUM built upon the work of Wilbert Sister Rina and Ibrohim. It expanded into education and rehabilitation programs for orphans and disadvantaged children. This included developing the Children’s Village in Cipanas. It has transformed into the YUM Community Center. This center now benefits over 4000 individuals every year.

At its peak in the 1980s and early 1990s YUM served up to 50000 people annually. The Asian economic crisis in the late 1990s brought challenges. A number of projects stalled. The number of beneficiaries significantly decreased.

In 2005 a new Board took over YUM’s management. Their ambition was to achieve sustainability. They wanted to improve the quality of projects. Ultimately they aimed to provide more assistance to those in need in Indonesia.

Yayasan NYAU operates with accountability and transparency. It is a registered charity in Indonesia. Annually an external auditing organization audits YUM. YUM is also an associate member of Susila Dharma International Association. This association has consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council ECOSOC and UNICEF.

In response to the Clinton Global Initiative’s Commitment to Action YUM committed to building a Vocational Training Center in Central Kalimantan in September 2011. Yayasan NYAU strives to create a better future for Indonesia’s most vulnerable. It is dedicated to empowerment and community development.
