Picture the scene. You stand before Egå Engsø a vast artificial lake shimmering under the Danish sun. This wasn’t always here. In the 1950s these meadows were drained for farming. Decades of intensive agriculture took their toll. The Egå river suffered. Its water quality plummeted. Nitrate fertilizers caused eutrophication. This environmental damage spurred action.

Egå Engsø is more than just a pretty lake. It’s a vital part of Aarhus’s environmental strategy. In the late 1990s local authorities and the Danish Forest and Nature Agency came up with a plan. They decided to reflood the meadows. The project formed part of Vandmiljøplan II a broader initiative to improve water quality. The aim? To reduce the impact of agricultural runoff.

The lake’s creation wasn’t without challenges. The project coincided with the construction of the Djursland motorway. This added another layer of complexity. The lake was completed in 2006. Today it covers 115 hectares. Another 100 hectares of reedbeds and meadows surround it.

Egå Engsø boasts surprising biodiversity. It’s home to rare species. The thick-shelled river mussel thrives here. This is an indicator of good water quality. It’s also a protected species under EU directives. Short-eared owls have made it their home. These are endangered birds. White storks sometimes rest here. They too are critically endangered in Denmark. The lake is a haven for many birds. Over 188 species have been registered. A birdwatching tower provides excellent views. It was funded by the Australian wine firm Banrock Station. They support wetland creation globally.

But Egå Engsø is more than just a wildlife sanctuary. It’s a recreational area. A 5 km path circles the lake. It’s perfect for walking running or cycling. There are two parking lots. There’s also an activity and learning area. It’s designed like a Stone Age settlement. There are shelters for camping too. You can even book an overnight stay.

Egå Engsø is also rich in history. In the Stone Age this area was part of a large fjord. Archaeological digs have unearthed many artifacts. These include traces of early settlements boats and kitchen middens. Remnants of orcas have been found. Stone Age people hunted these whales from dugout canoes. Some canoes discovered nearby have been carbon-dated to 5210-4910 BC. They are the oldest known boats in Northern Europe.

Egå Engsø is a testament to human ingenuity and environmental stewardship. It’s a place where nature and recreation coexist. A place where history and the future intertwine. A true gem in the Aarhus landscape. Enjoy your exploration of this remarkable site.
