Gazing across the modern skyline of Beylikdüzü, it’s hard to imagine this district as a tranquil farming village. Yet, Beylikdüzü’s history stretches back to the second century AD. Greek settlers from Byzantium established this area. They transformed the land into fertile fields. Beylikdüzü, meaning “Plains of the Beylik,” whispers tales of its Ottoman past. This district wasn’t always a bustling hub. It once served as a cherished retreat for residents of Constantinople, both during the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Imagine escaping the city walls for the serene “Garden,” as it was known during the later Ottoman period. The 20th century brought significant change. Following the Republic’s founding, the area was renamed Kavaklı, meaning “poplar trees.” This name paid homage to the abundance of these trees. The name stuck until 2003. Then the area took on its current name, Beylikdüzü. A defining moment in Beylikdüzü’s story was the devastating 1999 İzmit earthquake. This tragedy ironically sparked a period of growth. Many Istanbul residents, seeking safer housing, flocked to the newly constructed buildings in Beylikdüzü. The arrival of the Metrobus in 2012 further fueled this migration. Suddenly, Beylikdüzü felt closer to the heart of Istanbul. The district transformed into a desirable location. The population boomed from a mere 3,000 in the early 1990s to over 350,000 by 2018. This influx created a unique, welcoming atmosphere. Beylikdüzü became a melting pot, embracing newcomers from all corners of Istanbul and Turkey. Today, Beylikdüzü is a testament to its resilient spirit. It stands as a modern marvel. Yet, it retains echoes of its rich past. It’s a place where history and progress intertwine, offering a vibrant tapestry of urban life against the backdrop of the Marmara Sea.
