Picture the Gård fra True a four-winged East Jutland farm. It stands before you a testament to building methods and home interiors of around 200 years ago. This isn’t just any farm. The Gård fra True has a rich history. It’s a window into the past a glimpse into rural life centuries ago.

Originally a three-winged structure the Gård fra True expanded in the 1700s. The wings grew longer eventually merging. A fourth wing was added later completing the square courtyard. The layout reflects the importance of grain production. Barns and threshing floors alternate. Each grain type rug barley oats had its own space.

The house itself is a chimney house. It boasts two fireplaces and chimneys. One served the brewhouse the other the kitchen. Notice the curious twisted post in the servant’s room. Locals believe these posts came from the local church. They called them the “Angels of Engkjær”. Legend holds they protected against fire. The Gård fra True miraculously survived several fires that destroyed neighboring farms.

In the 1800s a small private bedroom was created. It featured two alcoves and a daybed. A significant upgrade for the time a privy was added. This was situated between the stable and the main house. Previously people used the dung heap or the stable.

The Gård fra True’s dark tarred timber frame is typical of East Jutland. Extra posts reinforce the lower framework. The boards are painted red. The walls are made of wattle and daub. This is the oldest known type of half-timbered paneling. In the 1800s brick began replacing the wattle and daub for its durability.

The Gård fra True’s garden blends ornamental and useful plants. Neatly edged beds mix shrubs herbs and plants used for dyeing or medicine. The garden itself was essential for self-sufficiency. It provided the necessities for food and medicine for the people.

The Gård fra True’s timber markings tell a remarkable story. They reveal the farm’s evolution from the 1600s. They show how the building expanded over time. These markings are like a code revealing the history of the farm’s construction.

The Gård fra True was a self-sufficient unit. It produced food clothing and tools. It even had its own privy a rare luxury at the time. Many farming families wouldn’t have that kind of comfort. People usually used the stable or the dung heap.

This remarkable farm is more than just buildings. It’s a living story. It’s a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of past generations.
