Indeed, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Puerto Rico seems to hold centuries of stories within its weathered walls. Built in the late 17th century, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Puerto Rico wasn’t always a place of worship. Originally part of a farmstead owned by Sergeant Major Sebastián Trujillo Ruiz, the land was purchased specifically to build the Ermita. The first chaplain? None other than Sebastián’s own nephew, ensuring the annual masses and festivities would continue. This tradition was further cemented by Sebastián’s generous endowment, a lifelong income generated from the surrounding farmhouse, house, well, and mill. Sadly, time took its toll on the original structures. Only the evocative Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Puerto Rico, with its simple charm and air of quiet contemplation, remains. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the people who built and cherished it.
