How many fish can a boy hold? Here at the Fischerbuberl, that question seems less philosophical and more like a playful challenge. The Fischerbuberl, a charming fountain sculpted by Ignatius Taschner in 1910, depicts just that – a young boy, a “buberl” in the Bavarian dialect, with not one, not two, but three fish. This whimsical fountain originally graced the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s bustling food market. It resided near the Freibank, the open-air meat market. But when the time came to rebuild the Schrannenhalle, the market hall, our Fischerbuberl needed a new home. It found its haven here on Wiener Platz, in the heart of Haidhausen. Look closely, though. The statue you see today isn’t the original. It’s a faithful replica, cast in 1934. The original, one can only assume, is having a well-deserved rest.
