Sunday at 9:30 AM the bells of the Ev.-meth. Zionskirche call the faithful to worship. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story of resilience and renewal built upon the ashes of the past.

The Ev.-meth. Zionskirche has a history rooted in the SÜdvostadt district of Dresden. Once, there were two Zionskirche buildings. The first, known as the Alte Zionskirche, was erected between 1908 and 1912. Schilling & Graebner designed it.

Imagine Dresden in February 1945. Allied bombs rained down, turning the city into an inferno. The Alte Zionskirche was struck. Fire ravaged the building, leaving it a ruin.

For years, the parish had no proper church. They gathered in a simple barracks next to the Alte Zionskirche ruins. This was their place of worship. It was a testament to their faith.

But the community dreamed of a new Ev.-meth. Zionskirche. A gift came from an unexpected place. The Church of Sweden offered to help build a new church. On June 5, 1981, the first stone of the Neue Zionskirche was laid. It was built on Bayreuther StraÜe. Eberhard Burger oversaw the construction.

Finally, on October 31, 1982, the Neue Zionskirche was inaugurated. It stands as a symbol of hope. It represents the enduring spirit of the congregation. But let’s not forget the past. The ruins of the Alte Zionskirche still stand. A temporary roof protects what remains. It now houses a lapidarium. Inside are 3,000 sculptures. They survived the bombing.

The Ev.-meth. Zionskirche community is still active. They gather every Sunday at 9:30 AM. Pastor Marie-Theres Ringeis leads the services. The church is located on Augsburger StraÜe 59.

Today, the Ev.-meth. Zionskirche stands as more than just a place of worship. It represents a community’s journey through devastation and renewal. It is a reminder that even from ashes, something beautiful can rise.
